SPEECH 60 Years anniversary of Acornhoek Parish by FR. JEROME SOKU

Arise, shine,

for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

(Is 60: 1-3)

This visionary quotation shows and confirm God’s intervention and purpose in human history.

Historical events have been unfolding in the life of Acornhoek parish during the past sixty years.

God has been “beautifying  his house using humble or cracked instruments. He has planted his Word and Light in the hearts of Acornhoek: from Tingaleni through Share to Marhomeni. So the christian community started worshiping Him until today.

The master of History has been so merciful to us, has shown love to us and has been our Stronghold, our Rock. We have learnt true life, to live our heaven on earth according to His will. We have seen, heard and touched the light of the Gospel. It brought His presence and deliverance among us.

God who is at work in historical events, has changed the present conditions of our lives and has illuminated a new future for His people. Acornhoek, arise and shine: “give light for your light has come.” Acornhoek will save Acornhoek, it starts to be a reality not only a wish of the children of Comboni. Thanks be to God for the Light of the Gospel in our hearts. Thanks for all the Comboni who made this buidling to look so beatiful and strong. Thanks in a special way to Bishop Sandri and all those who are here present today.

  1. Turning 60 years always come with growth’s challenges.

Let me suggest 3 of the psychological advices that are given to those turning 60:

  • Dress well: With your clothes, it is recommended you wear classic pieces with modern twists. Dear Parishioners, we should not only care about our personal good-looking and modernising our homes and leave our Parish and Local Christian Community structures looking very old.
  • Stay young in mind and life! If you keep a young mind, you will portray a young person!
  • Be Happy! Don’t get obsessed. One of the things about turning 60 gracefully is letting things go gracefully. Don’t obsess; just let things happen as they do.

Acornhoek, arise and shine: “give light for your light has come.” We thank so many good people who are really committed on praying for our Parish, helping us financially and putting their time to continue building up this Parish.

Maria Assumpta, you are 60s; continue doing something new.  Sit and look out of the window. Self-reliance at this age should be an asset not a wish. Your self-reliance attitude should help you to enjoy your retreat age.

  1. “Without good direction, people lose their way; the more wise counsel you follow, the better your chances” (Proverbs 11:14)

Why many inlfuencial catholics are leaving the Catholic Church after practicing the same faith for so long: lack of having a personalised faith rooted in the mystery of the Passion and Resurrection of Chirst; Jesus Christ was not just a good person. He was the Son of God made man, and he died so that we might live in eternal, loving relationship with Him. It is up to us to respond to this invitation by committing our very lives to Him. “Let your religion be less of a theory and more of a love affair.”

We must always remember to be sensitive to those who have been hurt by individual members of the Church. They’re right – the Church is full of sinners, and always has been – ever since the betrayals of Peter & Judas.

But while the Church may be full of sinners, it’s still the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit. Abandoning the Church because it’s full of sinful people is like abandoning a gym because it’s full of out-of-shape people. Let us always seek reform in our Church, but let us do so from within its walls.
“The Church is not a museum for saints, but a hospital for sinners.”

We should Help our brothers and sisters to see through the false gospels they’ve been fed by our culture, our modern society and our traditions.  We should not always rely on the homily of the priests or the help from him. But to learn how to Contemplate the Scriptures. Don’t let the faith become “old hat.” Teach them to experience the miracles of the Incarnation and Resurrection anew through the eyes of the early Christians of Acornhoek. At last Challenge those weakened in their faith to approach our Lord with honesty, humility, and an open heart. When we do, the God who makes all things new will transform us in ways we never thought possible.

Lastly, let us avoid Syncretism of religions:  we cannot combine water and oil, unless they are boiled together using fire to have a tasty soup. We cannot combine our cathoilc christian faith and our traditional beliefs. They need the fire of love to blend them into a power which leads us truthfully. By adding an incompatible belief it corrupts the original religion, rendering it no longer true. It distorts the original faith and betrays the pure truth of the original. The substitution or modification of the elements of faith are not always healthy. So we should work hard to know our original faith better in order to be able to cook a tasty and nice soup of our faith. “ You shall worship the Lord your God only.(Mt 4: 10)

May Maria Assumpta pray for us, for the vocations in our Parish and for leaders to be able to continue the building up of this faith structure.
